Do One Thing And Do It Well

12 Jan 2015

This is going to be the introductory post, but not the first, of this blog. While writing this, I am thinking that I will never manage to update this blog constantly as I hope I will do. I have tried many times in the past to create a personal website or blog, a place where to share my thoughts and the programs I have written. I always failed because I get tired soon. Yet I often find myself thinking to write some post on an imaginary blog! I would like to keep a diary of the thoughts that pervade my mind from time to time and share them with you.

I know few people will read these pages, and so I commit to write for myself. You may ask why can't I just write a paper diary if I want to write for myself! I think writing on a place that can be accessed by everybody is far more appealing, because there is always a tiny probability that somebody will read it, and this affects the way I write. I put more thought on how to translate ideas into words clearly and I pay more attention to grammar and spelling. Since I am not a native English speaker, this is also an opportunity for me to exercise in written English (by the way, I really appreciate corrections!). It is also an exercise in writing in general, which I believe is a quite important skill.

So what will this blog be about? I cannot tell. I am inclined to believe that I will use it to write about topics which have always inspired me: lifestyle, environment, consumerism, science, programming and modern day world. I find it difficult to say "This blog is about X", and this may be a problem, I admit. Maybe it would be better to focus on one thing and to it well, as the Unix mantra says. Also, other people probably do not care about my thoughts but may find a blog because they are interested in a specific topic.

So, let's say this blog is about self-improvement through learning and experimentation. When I code I enjoy it because I find it rewarding to see the final product; but years of programming as a hobby, while producing nothing but a bunch of half-finished programs, let me learn a lot about computers and software. Probably the knowledge I have accumulated will be useful for me in the future to find a job (I am a bachelor student right now). When I think about consumerism and I realize that buying useless stuff is not a good way to be happy, I try to apply this thought by not buying something and feeling how it is different. This is what I mean when I say self-improvement.

I do not want to sound like I want to show off with sentences like "self-improvement through learning and experimentation". I find that annoying and quite widespread in many blogs (especially in the blog's subtitles!). In real life I can state many examples of people who show off and everybody knows how irritating that is. I often fall in this trap of feeling better than others myself, even though I try to contain the problem. This also creates problems in the relations between people, which are one of the most precious goods we have in our lives.

Therefore the my commitment is to be constant in the updates and to show humility and honesty of mind. How well the words I have written sound to me! This feels like a good start. So keep up!

Postscript

This may sound strange as an introduction, especially for the language I used! I wrote it after reading The Discovery of India of Nehru and I tried to mimic the style. This was a good experiment since I am not very good at languages!
